About Your Tooth

Having healthy teeth contributes to your overall good health.  The first tooth will come at about six months of age.  During childhood the 20 primary or “baby teeth” will come and go between the ages of 5 and 13.  By the age of 21 you will have all 32 permanent teeth which will last for the remainder of your life.  Developing good habits for caring for your teeth and regular checkups are important in keeping permanent teeth healthy.

There are 4 types of teeth – incisors, canines, premolars and molars.  Canines and premolars are also known as cuspids or bicuspids.

The following list includes the parts of your tooth anatomy:

  • The crown is the top part of the tooth and it is covered by enamel
  • The enamel is the hard mineralized surface of your tooth that protects your tooth from decay
  • The gumline is where the tooth and gums meet. Gums protect and cover the roots of your teeth
  • The root is imbedded in bone, your tooth may have one or multiple roots and the chamber with the roots contain the dental pulp
  • The pulp is the soft tissue in the center of your tooth where nerves and blood vessels are located
  • The dentin is the layer under the enamel which consists of millions of microscopic tubes that lead to the pulp

Fortunately, today dentists and endodontists can provide preventive and restorative care of your teeth to avoid loss of your permanent teeth.
